Abalone

Abalone are large, edible sea snails. Their shells are open spirals, the insides of which are lined with mother-of-pearl. These shiny, many-coloured shells were used by many First Nations peoples for jewelry. The abalone ornaments at Qithyil are probably made from a large species called black abalone, traded all the way from California.
